Cheap garment industry facing image crisis

dhaka_aThe World Bank has warned that Bangladesh's garment industry is facing a "severe image crisis". Last week's tragedy claimed more than 400 lives. And over 700 people have been killed in garment factory fires in the past few years. Working conditions are atrocious and 'safety' seems to be a foreign concept.

BP might pay up US $16 billion

BP_smallThe civil trial against BP for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico begins today in New Orleans. The U.S. federal government and the five coastal states are offering a $16 billion settlement. If BP refuses the offer and loses at trial, it could face considerably higher penalties.
