BP might pay up US $16 billion The civil trial against BP for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico begins today in New Orleans. The U.S. federal government and the five coastal states are offering a $16 billion settlement. If BP refuses the offer and loses at trial, it could face considerably higher penalties.
