Towards a new Stone Age Stone instead of metal: By using a carbon-fibre laminate, stone – such as granite – can replace metal and reinforced concrete, as well as pure carbon fibre structures, in many of their applications, says Kolja Kuse. The material is as light as aluminium, has a minimal thermal expansion coefficient and is available in large quantities. It also requires considerably less energy to produce.
A real bookstore for virtual books
Let nature show the way The Wyss Institute at the University of Harvard wants to develop innovative products by observing and imitating nature. This has been made possible thanks to a record gift by Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss. Now a conference in Zurich which will be held later this month plans to bring these ideas to Europe.
Researchers invent ‘organic’ batteries Until now, batteries are not only a burden on the environment, but they also require rare earth metals. Two scientists from Sweden and Poland have now developed an environmentally friendly battery out of paper pulp that is both biodegradable and saves on rare and precious resources.
